An International Comparison of Skills, Traits and Job Mobility

Making use of an international survey that directly assesses the cognitive skills of the adult population, I document systematic differences in the effect of skills on job mobility across the 37 countries in the sample. While economic growth is associated with relatively higher job mobility among skilled workers, the prevalence of information and communication technology (ICT) in the workplace is associated with relatively lower job mobility. The documented patterns are in line with Schumpeterian growth models of creative destruction in which skilled workers transition to jobs with advanced technologies more easily.

Do Overoptimistic Men Drive Creative Destruction? Evidence of Gendered Inventive Activity in Finland

This study extends the analysis of the "patenting gender gap" into design rights and utility model (UMs), which are alternative methods for protecting intellectual property (IP). The analysis is descriptive and uses registry data from the Finnish patent and registration office (PRH) covering the years 1982–2013. A persistent gender gap is found for all intellectual property rights (IPRs): women are inventors and designers only in a small share of filings. The gap has narrowed over time for national patent and design right filings but not for UM filings. Tässä tutkielmassa analysoidaan kasvuyritysten sekä tieto- ja viestintäteknologian (ICT) kontribuutioita työpaikkojen luomiseen ja työn tuottavuuteen. Suomen talouden kehitys on ollut heikkoa viimeisen vuosikymmenen ajan globaalista finanssikriisistä johtuen. Työttömyys on noussut korkealle tasolle ja työn tuottavuuden kasvu hidastunut, ja lopulta pysähtynyt. Lisäksi on keskusteltu siitä, syntyykö Suomeen uusia työpaikkoja.
